DIRECTOR OF MUSIC AND ORGANIST POSITION

DIRECTOR OF MUSIC AND ORGANIST – PART-TIME starting October 1, 2026

New Canaan, CT – on the train line from NY or New Haven

Responsibilities:

1. Leading worship through music – one 10 am Sunday morning service per week and occasional

extra services such as Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Christmas Eve.

2. Lead the adult choir rehearsal – one evening per week. 

3. Administrative duties, such as staff meetings and budgeting the music program. 

4. 12-15 hours per week would be expected to include practice and planning time.


Basic Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Music, Music Education or related field, or equivalent experience (Master’s Degree a plus).

2. Demonstrated proficiency on keyboard instruments (organ and piano).

3. Experience in a church-related setting.

4. Sense of humor and positive attitude.

5. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.


Musical Competencies:

  1. Demonstrated ability to lead/support worship for both choral and congregational singing, as well as instrumental ensembles.

  2. Experience in collaboration for worship planning with the minister.

  3. Willingness to incorporate a wide variety of musical styles in worship, including contemporary

and traditional.


Resources Available to the Music Director:

  1. 3-manual Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ 

  2. Steinway B grand piano in excellent condition

  3. Well-maintained 5-octave set of Schulmerich handbells and hand chimes

  4. Large musical library

  5. An excellent sanctuary with outstanding acoustics 

Salary range $20,000 - $30,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits include vacation and sick leave.
